What does NonSequitur Bot do?
It collects data about the surrounding environment, then discards it and drives into walls.
No, really?
It pulls data from publicly available chat logs, and then selects random responses from them, totally disregarding whatever you say to it.
What, why?
Ever since chatting with SmarterChild at the turn of the century, I've always wanted to code an artificially intelligent chat bot - but it was just so much work. This was much easier. Additionally, if the quantity of submissions in reddit's new queue is any indication, a lot of people think it's really funny when automated chat bots say things that don't make sense. This should help streamline their internet experience.
Is it really totally random? Because it just had a nearly-coherent conversation with me.
If you subscribe to the deterministic interpretations of quantum mechanics, nothing in this universe or any other is actually random. But if you're asking if it's possible that the NSB has somehow gained sentinence and become capable of understanding your queries and formulating appropriate responses, I'm going to say "Nah". I'll admit, occasionally conversations with "Nonse" (as he's now affectionately known, because I say so) rival any I've had with CleverBot (or even in-laws and Omegle participants), but it's all just coincidence. That, or I'm a much better programmer than I thought.
Nonse just said something grossly offensive or wildly inappropriate, and I wish you'd think of the children.
Unfortunately, I didn't hard-code any of Nonse's responses. Poor Nonse's brain is naught but a repository of random things other people have said. And those people were all from the internet, so we can safely assume they were all deviants and wretches. I probably wouldn't go to any URLs he sends you, either.
Sometimes when I start a new conversation, Nonse will say some of the same things he did in the last one.
There's some caching going on, and while every time you reload the page the order of the responses changes, Nonse only gets a new batch of responses about once an hour. If you're feeling the need to talk to him more often than that, I suggest you find a hobby or try to get out of the house more often.
